Mvumi Secondary School

PP-TAN-01
440 pupils between 12-25 years

Mvumi is located in the heart of Tanzania 40km south from the capital. Education at the school is taught in English but illiteracy is high and the school has a desperate shortage of all books. The stakes are high for many of Mvumi's secondary school pupils where a good education could mean the difference between life and death in a community where one in three people have HIV. Following the establishment of a charity trust to support the school, the school has been transformed from a tiny rural institution to a substantial boarding school. Where previously, children were largely on a subsistence peasant level, they now have an opportunity to get a good education and become professionals, teachers, nurses, whatever. Commenting on the schools limited library facilities, Julie Bengough, a teacher at the school said "we have so few reading books that we almost don?t have a specific demand based on experience. Because we have so few books to teach with, it is a struggle for many of them to grasp even elementary English."  For more information about Mvumi School, please visit www.mvumischooltrust.co.uk

Every now and again a small idea comes along which has the potential to make a big difference. The Pelican Post is one of those. I'll certainly be supporting it and I hope many others do, too.
