Terms and Conditions

I think this scheme is wonderful, and I am very keen to support this. Throughout much of Africa, a book is precious and therefore getting hands on a book is very important to people. What is also very appealing about the Pelican Post is that I think it is rather nice for children to be able to read stories that they can identify with.

We will email you a list of the books you pledged to send for your records, and if you opt to be notified about future opportunities to send you updates, we will send you emails.

You can request we remove you from our database at any time by sending us a message from the contact us page.

Any contact details you supply will be treated with the strictest confidence and will not be passed on to any third party.

Pelican Post takes your privacy seriously. The information you provide through the website will be held under the Data Protection Act 1998.

Please read our Privacy Policy

Posting Guidelines:

Please note that by submitting a 'pledge' to the website, you are making a pledge to purchase a particular book and post that book by your own means to a specific partner school and are not entering into any financial or contractual agreement with the Pelican Post team.

Please consult your chosen postal service provider for terms and conditions of delivery. The Pelican Post team cannot be responsible for any items that are lost or stolen in the post nor for any delay or failure to deliver your parcel by your postal provider.

There are a variety of postal services for posting from the UK. We would recommend when posting a book to request postage for 'printed papers' which is cheaper than other item postage rates, and does not require a customs form or charge to be incurred.

In many instances, you may be informed that surface mail, 'printed papers' may take only six to eight weeks. However, experience has identified that in reality, surface mail may take up to a year to deliver. As a consequence we would recommend posting 'printed papers - Air Mail' whenever possible (and not financially restricting) which in many instances, is expected to take between eight and eleven days to deliver.

If posting a book using 'printed paper' rates, please do not include any other items other than books in the parcel. Your delivery may be subject to additional customs charges otherwise.

When posting a pledge, please write the URN number (along with your name as the book donor if you so wish) and 'Pelican Post' in the inside cover of each book you intend to post. This will assist us in identifying your specific book when it is received by the target community, and will also provide a lasting memory of your generous donation to every child who subsequently reads that book.

Overseas Donors:

If you have been inspired by reading this website and would like to contribute to the project but do not live in the UK, you can still follow the get involved steps to request for a profiles address details but please note, postage costs may be considerably more expensive to delivery from the UK. Please consult your local postal service provider for further information.

If you are living outside of the UK and would like to find out more about setting up a similar project in your country, then please do not hesitate to contact us.

Our guiding privacy principles

Compliance with the Data Protection Act 1998 underlies all of our personal information privacy practices. We also have a set of guiding principles which govern how we use the information that we collect about you on this website. These principles are:

We aim to continuously improve our website for you. We use information about you to help us to do this.

We give you control over the information that we hold about you, who is allowed to see it and how it is used.

We will not use your information for any other reason unless you specifically allow us to by choosing to select the opt in boxes on our registration form.

We take all reasonable care to safeguard your information through security policies and secure business processes.

How we collect information about you

We collect information from you in several ways:

Directly from you. Sometimes we'll ask you for information about yourself, for example in our registration form or when you visit the website.

From what you do on our site. This can show us for example which countries you click on, which books you select and which pages you visit the most. We will use this information to personalise the site to better meet your needs and, where you have given us your consent by choosing to opt-in on the registration form, to update you on progress and provide you with further information about our service which we believe will be of interest to you.

Who sees your information?

The information we collect through our website will be used within the Pelican Post group of companies. Exactly who sees your information depends on the context in which you provided it and whether or not you have opted in on the registration form. You can change your mind about the opt ins at any time through the Edit your profile page.

Sometimes we'll share your information with carefully selected third parties outside the Pelican Post group. We may do this for the following reasons:

To provide you with a service. Some of our services are provided in conjunction with our business partners, and we'll need to disclose your information to them to provide you with the services.

To provide you with information about special promotions and offers. If you have given your consent by choosing to opt in, we may share some of your information with carefully selected third parties (for example, selected publishers) so that they can provide you with information about products and services that may be of interest to you.

To protect the Pelican Post group or others. We may share your information with third parties when we believe it is necessary to comply with the law or protect our or another person's rights, property, or safety. This includes exchanging information with third parties to protect against fraud and reduce payment risks.

Your information may be processed outside the European Economic Area (EEA) where privacy laws may not provide protection to the same level as in England, but if so, we ensure that the processing is carried out to standards equivalent to our own.

We will only deal with third parties that we trust to act in our customers' best interests and who treat our customers' information with the same stringent controls that we apply ourselves.

But please note - a deleted cookie will often be replaced the next time you visit the website that put it there.
  2. If your browser is set up to reject application session cookies, some applications on our website will not work.
  3. Because the Site cookie may contain or refer to some of your personal information we recommend you do not register for our website from a publicly available computer.
