Book Aid International
I am going to read the stories from the Tales from Africa book onto tape cassettes for the blind students. Thank you.
Mvumi School, TanzaniaThe children's titles for Pelican Post were selected by Book Aid International, a charity that works to increase access to books in Sub-Saharan Africa and Palestine.
Book Aid International distributes a wide range of new books to institutions and libraries in Africa. These books are donated to us directly from publishers in the UK.
Book Aid International provides additional support to these libraries and institutions, to ensure that the right books are sent, that all books are cared for, and that libraries are well-managed.
Books are sent to a variety of partners:
- Medical and surgical books are sent to health colleges and hospitals
- Books on agriculture and human rights are sent to local charities
- Higher education texts are sent to universities
- Teaching books are sent to educational institutes
- Story and picture books are sent to public and community libraries
All the books sent are brand new and are carefully catalogued and selected according to the requirements of the recipients.
In addition to sending books of international relevance, Book Aid International helps develop local publishing and books in local languages. Book Aid International also support libraries with additional grants, including:
- Grants for library renovation and refurbishment
- Grants for outreach work and library publicity
- Grants for training librarians
- Grants for the purchase of books locally
- Grants for the production of books in local languages
- Grants for reading promotion activities
Book Aid International believes that sending books to African is only a small part of the challenge. They work to ensure that the books are also well-used and well-managed at their final location, and that a vibrant culture of reading is developed.
To this end Book Aid International are liaising with the Pelican Post to assist partner schools in providing further information and support on managing a book collection and on reading books in the classroom.
